The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face-to-face: BIOL 231 Microbiology Lab is a face-to-face class. Background content for the day’s lab will be provided for students at the beginning of class; however, students are expected to come prepared to perform specified Microbiology Lab exercises. This is a hands-on course and students are required to actively participate in the class. Expect a combination of individual and group work.

Resource Use

Textbooks: The Microbiology Lab manual is used as the sole printed resource. Modifications may be made due to the nature of the lab. The Microbiology Lecture textbook is not necessary for this course, but may be a helpful resource.

Online homework: All prelab assignments require online access for drop box submission. Access to online scientific databases may be of assistance for writing formal lab reports.

Science Resource Center: The SRC has microscopes and slides available for anyone needing extra practice.

Students will be assessed through a combination of quizzes, prelab submissions, lab exercise write-ups, formal lab reports and four exams. There is no cumulative final in this course.

Homework Policy

Quizzes cannot be made up if late or absent. Lab exercise write-ups are due the lab session after all results have been obtained.

Attendance Policy

It is essential to be in attendance for all lab sessions. Due to the nature of Microbiology and necessity to incubate organisms, lab exercises may span several lab sessions. Absences may result in missing out on more than one lab exercise and may deeply impact learning.

I am available to meet with students by appointment. For short discussions, I am also available to stay after class most days.
