Kathleen Lefert

The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are whole group lecture with occasional small group work.  Computational examples, applications, and theory are also included.  Students are encouraged to participate.  For Math 181 and below, I provide fill-in-the-blank class notes to follow the lecture.

Online sections include video instruction with online homework as well as written work that must be submitted for grading.  The online homework can be repeated for mastery.  Deadlines are enforced.  Most communication with the instructor will be by email.

Resource Use

Textbooks are used to supplement the lecture, especially if you are absent.  In most classes, the textbook can be accessed as an e-book through the online homework software.

Calculators are used in every course.  In Math 115 and 116, scientific calculators may be used, but graphing calculators may not.  In Math 171 and above, a graphing calculator is required.

Computer software, whenever needed, will be available for student use in the Math Resource Center.  In Math 181, statistical software will be used and will be available through the online homework.

Online homework is used extensively in all of my courses.  In addition to online homework, all classes will have some form of written homework as well to help prepare for written exams.

All classes have homework, both online and written, 3 -  5 unit exams, and a final exam.  Math 115 and 116 typically have 4 quizzes, a midterm and a final exam.  Roughly 80% of the grade will be determined by quizzes/exams, and 20% by the homework and other material in the course.

Homework Policy

Due to fairness considerations, late work is NOT accepted for credit.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding.  However, absences are NOT part of the grade.  Makeup quizzes/exams are not given after the exam date.  The final exam score can be used to replace 1 lower quiz/exam score.

I am normally on campus early morning through mid-afternoon Monday through Friday.  Responses to emails normally occur within 12 hours, but possibly longer on weekends.
