The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

BIOL 230 Microbiology Lecture: Fast-paced lecture utilizing PowerPoint in conjunction with the textbook and study guides, which are posted on D2L. Students are encouraged to participate and ask questions.

BIOL 231 Microbiology Laboratory: Short lecture and demonstration followed by hands-on experimentation as an individual as well as in groups with the focus on understanding and evaluating experimentation.

Resource Use

Textbooks are essential in any section of BIOL 230 and 231 for supplementing the lecture (especially if you are absent), and providing practice problems. In BIOL 231 the textbook is essential for lab reports and maintaining results.


BIOL 230 Microbiology Lecture is composed of four exams for roughly 80% of the grade, and a research paper worth roughly 20% of the grade.

BIOL 231 Microbiology Lecture has four exams for roughly 40% of the grade, papers worth roughly 10% of the grade, attendance worth roughly 20%, lab reports worth roughly 15% and quizzes worth roughly 15%.

Homework Policy

BIOL 230 Microbiology Lecture: No homework given but student is expected to read the assigned chapter before class.

BIOL 231 Microbiology Laboratory: Homework: 1-2 lab reports from the designated lab manual per class (15% of the total grade).

Attendance Policy

BIOL 230 Microbiology Lecture: Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended to be successful in the course.

BIOL 231 Microbiology Laboratory: Attendance/participation: mandatory with no excused absences (20% of the total grade).
