The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are moderately-paced, and students are encouraged to ask questions. Class notes are given and are posted on D2L. Theory and numerous examples are provided.

Online sections of Math 111 and Math 115 use MyMathLab (Squires). Instruction is delivered through the Squires package in the form of video lectures, concept check problems, homework problems and quizzes. Deadlines are enforced. Most communication with the instructor is by email.

Resource Use

Textbooks are necessary for Math 171 and Math 116 face-to-face, but not required for Math 115 or for online classes.

Calculators are required in every course. A graphing calculator is not required in any course, but may be used. A scientific calculator or graphing calculator is required in Math 171.

Online homework is required in all classes, both face-to-face and online. MyMathLab is used for online homework in face-to-face classes, and MyMathLab (Squires) is used in Math 111 and Math 115 online classes.

Face-to-face classes generally have homework on MyMathLab, 3 unit exams, and a comprehensive final exam.

Online classes have homework and quizzes on MyMathLab, one midterm exam (on campus or at an approved proctoring site), and a comprehensive final exam (on campus or at an approved proctoring site).

Homework Policy

Deadlines are enforced for full credit on homework. Late homework will be accepted with a 10% deduction in points up to a certain date. In online classes, late quizzes are not accepted.

Attendance Policy

Any absence will affect your grade because you will miss explanations and lectures. However, absences  are not part of the grading formula. Makeup exams are not given after the exams date. The final exam percentage may replace up to two previous unit exam grades.

I am on the main campus in Overland Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and my office hours are usually in the early afternoon. I have office hours at our Lawrence campus on other days. I am also available to meet with students other days. I generally respond to emails within a short time, and always within 8 hours max., even on the weekends.
