The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will deviate from this description in some respects.

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are typically lecture-based; PowerPoint presentations are provided on Desire2Learn. Much of the lecture is based on material in the textbook, current events and other practical applications. There are generally four in-class assignments that students can work on together or alone.

Resource Use

Textbooks are referred to frequently in the class and are an important supplement to the lecture. There is little to no homework assigned from the textbook.

Atlases are an integral part of the course and are the basis of, at minimum, nine homework assignments.

Students are assessed based on a points system. A typical semester would include:

  • 75 points for attendance
  • 325 points for homework: 13 assignments worth 25 points each
  • 100 points for papers: 2 summary response papers worth 50 points each
  • 400 points for Unit Exams: 4 exams worth 100 points each
  • 100 points for the Final Exam

Homework Policy

In-class assignments must be completed and turned in that day, and thus may not be made up. All other homework is due at the beginning of each class or it is considered late. Late homework is accepted if submitted within 1 week of the posted due date; however, the score is reduced by a letter grade each class period it is late.

Attendance Policy

Students are awarded attendance points, so consistent attendance is important to maintain a higher grade. Students are expected to arrive on time in order to be counted as present. Since the course is lecture-based, regular attendance is very important to successfully complete the course. Make-up exams are not allowed without a note from a doctor, instructor or coach, or prior notification to the instructor.

I am usually available before class and during normal office hours. During the week, email responses will normally occur within 24 hours. Email responses on the weekend will generally take 48 hours.
