Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections: I give class notes for all classes through Precalculus. We will review previous material as needed, and introduce new material for each class meeting. Homework is assigned every week.

Online sections: For online algebra courses, we will use WebAssign; for online Business Math, assignments are completed in D2L; and for online Statistics, we will use Hawkes Learning Systems software.

Resource Use

Textbooks: we will use a textbook for each course, but courses using MyMathLab, WebAssign, or Hawkes Learning Systems include an electronic textbook with the software purchase. There is an electronic textbook option for Business Math.

Calculators: no calculator is permitted in Fundamentals of Math, but calculators may be used in all algebra courses, and a graphing calculator is required for Statistics and all courses from College Algebra and beyond. Students may not use a tablet or phone calculator on exams. Calculators may be rented at the beginning of the semester from the Math Resource Center, provided they are available.

Computer software: All algebra courses will use MyMathLab or WebAssign, and Statistics will use Hawkes Learning Systems. A variety of free online tools will be used for Calculus courses and beyond.

Online homework: Homework in all algebra courses will be completed using MyMathLab or WebAssign, homework in Business Math will be completed using D2L (Canvas beginning Summer 2018), and homework in Statistics will be completed using Hawkes Learning Systems. All other courses will have homework assignments that are a combination of textbook assignments, work sheets, and projects that may require the use of free online tools.

Assessment

Assessment will be a combination of homework (textbook problems and worksheets), class work, unit exams, and a cumulative final exam. Statistics includes a semester-long research project and presentation, and Calculus classes and beyond will include mini-projects.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned for almost every class. Late homework may be completed for ¾ credit, but must be turned in within one week of the original due date.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is expected. If missing class is unavoidable, you will still be responsible for completing all assigned work.

Availability

I am available via email, over the phone, and during my office hours. Email is usually returned within one business day, but email sent after 5 p.m. on Friday will be returned on the following business day. For greatest success, you should ask for help as soon as you need clarification or additional examples over course topics.

I am very lucky to love what I do, so please do not ever feel that you are a burden or asking too many questions. My office hours are for you.
