Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are moderately paced especially Tuesday/Thursday classes.  The first part of class consists of answering homework questions. The lecture time consists of class notes with many examples completed by the student in a group setting. Students should use the examples completed in class to assist them when doing homework.  I prefer lots of student participation, and I want every student to feel comfortable asking questions.

Resource Use

Textbooks: Students should use their textbook to supplement the lecture, especially if the student is absent.  Students will need to be reading their textbook because I will not be able to give you all the information during lecture time.  A hard copy of the textbook is optional for Math 115, 116, and 171 because the e-book is available; however, I still recommend purchasing a hard copy.

Calculators:  In Math 115 and Math 116, only scientific calculators are allowed. In Math 171 and above, a graphing calculator is required.

Computer software: I use MyMathLab for Math 115, 116 and 171 for all homework assignments and quizzes.

Online homework

Online homework is used extensively in Math 115, 116, and 171.  MyMathLab is used for all homework assignments and quizzes.

Assessment

The student’s grade is based on 4 to 6 tests, 10 to 20 in class assignments, homework and quizzes using MyMathLab, and a comprehensive final exam.

Homework Policy

Homework on MyMathLab will be accepted late but with a 25% penalty.  This is definitely not recommended.

Attendance Policy

A “team approach” or a seating chart will be used to facilitate attendance checking and to help me learn each student’s name.  If the student does not have more than 3 absences, the final exam can replace one low test score.  We cover at least one section a day, so missing class could be a strong setback. One of my pet peeves is people getting up during class, so please be ready to stay the entire class period.

Availability

I have office hours Monday through Friday with some hours in the morning and some in the afternoon depending on the semester.  If the student is not able to come during scheduled office hours, other times are available by appointment.  I check emails regularly and will normally respond within 12 hours, but possibly longer on weekends.
