Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

I use a combination of lecture and discussion in my classes.  I do numerous examples of the material covered each session.  I strongly encourage student involvement in class discussions and welcome questions and comments.

Assessment

I give four unit exams per semester plus the final exam.  Questions and problems are of several varieties – students are expected to show all work.  In addition to the unit exams, I do work checks and unit reviews. Unit exams are each worth 100 points and the final is also worth 100 points.  Work checks/unit reviews are worth a total of 100 points, making a total of 600 points for the course.

Homework Policy

Each class period has associated homework problems.  I count homework assignments as extra credit, totaling no more than 4% of the total points for the course.  I would strongly encourage students to do the homework, however, as this practice usually results in higher scores on associated tests.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is usually essential for doing well in any math class.

In addition, attending class regularly helps a student to understand the material covered and encourages a student to stay current.  If a student misses no more than once in a 16-session class, he/she may eliminate his/her lowest test score and replace it with the next highest score.

Availability

I am on campus only during class times, but students can feel free to call me at home, leave messages on my email, or make arrangements at class time for additional instructor help.

Additional information

I really enjoy teaching math classes at Johnson County Community College. I hope you will also enjoy taking any of my classes.  It has been my experience that a positive attitude, an open mind, and a willingness  to expend some effort will almost always insure success in my classes.  Your  progress in any course will be greatly influenced by how well you can manage   your time.  Please be reasonable in setting aside time for homework and test   preparation.
