Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.


Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections:  Typically, my classes are a traditional lecture format. I provide notes and examples while asking for student input and participation.  Students sometimes work in groups, or work problems on the board in pairs. 

Resource Use

Textbooks

Textbooks are essential; either a physical copy or an e-book is needed. 

Calculators

A graphing calculator is needed in Math 171 or above.  A scientific calculator is needed for Math 115 or 116.

Computer software

Students are expected to check Canvas, the online course management system, regularly to view extra handouts and announcements.  Grades will be updated regularly in Canvas.

Online homework

Online homework is assigned in Math 171, 172, and 173.  I use the WebAssign software for these courses. 

Assessment

Every course will have at least 3 exams and a comprehensive final.  Most courses will have between 5 to 10 quizzes during the semester, to assess your understanding at more frequent intervals.  In Math 171, 172, 173, online homework is also a portion of the student’s grade. 

Make-ups:  there are no make-ups on missed quizzes.  Missed exams can (sometimes) be made up.  See syllabus for specific details. 

Homework Policy

Math 171, 172, and 173 use online homework.  In other courses without online homework, I collect homework only occasionally, on announced days.  However, pop quizzes are used to encourage students to stay current with assignments. 

Attendance Policy

Students are strongly encouraged to maintain regular attendance.  It is much easier to learn the material when you are in class!  Some quizzes are unannounced and missed quizzes cannot be made up. 

Availability

I am usually available at least one hour each class day as noted in the syllabus.  I try to respond to student emails within 12 to 24 hours.  It may be longer on weekends.
