Class Format

Typical Class Format

All classes are taught as Face-to-face sections using a mixed lecture, individual practice, and group work format. A typical class will begin with homework questions followed by a short conceptual review of the material. After that, new material is presented with plenty of time for individual and/or group practice.

Resource Use

Textbooks are optional for all courses for which online homework is used, typically courses numbered MATH 181 or below, since the textbooks are offered online in those cases. For classes numbered above 181, the textbook is required and used extensively to supplement work done in class. The exception to this is MATH 173 where the textbook is required.

Calculators are used to supplement the learning. The appropriate use of calculators is discussed in many contexts. For MATH 173 and above a graphing calculator is required. A scientific calculator is sufficient for all other classes.

Computer software is used in Statistics.

Online homework is used extensively for courses numbered 111, 115, 116, 181. All other courses will use minimal (if any) online homework.

Assessment

Typically, a student’s grade will be composed of scores on homework, class work (including group work and quizzes), unit exams, and the final exam.

Homework Policy

In courses numbered 111, 115, 116, 173, and 181, textbook homework will be collected and count toward the semester grade. This homework must be turned in on time to receive credit. For other courses, textbook homework is assigned for practice but is not checked. However, in these courses, other assignments may be collected for a grade.

Attendance Policy

Students should expect that any missed class time will result in an incomplete understanding of the material. This, in turn, may adversely affect grades. However, attendance is not used in the grade calculation. If an absence is anticipated, assignments can be turned in to the Mathematics division office before class time to receive credit. To be fair to all students, no exams may be taken after the schedule exam date due to absence. However, the final exam score may be used as a replacement the lowest unit exam score if it is lower than the final exam score.
