The Humanities program at JCCC covers a range of subjects and topics to choose from. Explore what you’re passionate about—whether it’s art, politics, or history.

What will I learn in JCCC's Humanities program?

Humanities courses at JCCC will open your world to different cultures, allow you to explore what goes into making a work of art, and give you perspective on how history is made. Capture new insights into everything from poetry and paintings to business and politics.

You’ll come away knowing more about our human experience and how to:

  • Use creativity
  • Think critically
  • Reason logically
  • Ask meaningful questions
  • Weigh evidence skeptically
  • Build writing and critical reading skills

When you study Humanities at JCCC, you’ll dive into an intellectual soup of moral, intellectual and spiritual issues. Take a look at a few examples:

  • Exploring philosophy might spark thoughts about ethical questions.
  • Surveying art history could make you wonder about the artists’ lives, their culture and creative decisions.
  • Reading literature from other parts of the world could provide insight into democracy and religion.
  • Studying history and anthropology could explain the past and at the same time give you a clearer picture of the present.

Why choose JCCC for Humanities courses?

For almost every major, whether associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree, Humanities credits are required. You can fulfill your Humanities and general education requirements at JCCC at a fraction of the cost then transfer your credits to a four-year school later.

A few reasons to consider the Humanities program at JCCC include:

  • New active learning studios encourage collaboration and interactive discussion.
  • Visiting the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and attending shows in the Midwest Trust Center Series make homework fun.
  • Small class sizes with no more than 30 students allow you to have one-on-one conversations with your professor.
  • Academic theatre, Ruel Joyce Recital Series and Jazz Series performances are free educational entertainment.
  • All of our Humanities classes fulfill state school requirements.
  • Many classes count toward Humanities and diversity requirements.
Michael Robertson, Professor Emeritus, Humanities
