GENE FLAHARTY received his BA in Communication Arts (Television and Radio Production) from Park University with a minor interest in Theatre. He has been doing professional makeup for TV, film, print, and theatre for over 30 years in the Kansas City area. His first makeup job was with the Kansas City Opera while he was still a college student. He then became their makeup artist for the next fourteen years. He enjoys teaching college students, and when he’s not helping them, he’s out doing makeup on other celebrities including Martin Short, Dee Wallace Stone, Davy Jones, David Ogden Stiers, B. D. Wong, Art Garfunkel, Gary Sandy and Phyllis Diller. He has designed over 150 different theater productions including A Streetcar Named Desire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Man of La Mancha, Into the Woods, Fuddy Mears and many more. Gene enjoys makeup education and design as he does lecture/demonstrations across the country in his full time position as Sales Manager/Makeup Artist for Mehron, Inc. in New York. He also is responsible for initiating the Makeup Design Award for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He has been on the Board of Directors of the National Costumers Association for 2 years and is serving on the Board of Advisors for the Stage Directions Magazine. He has been published with articles “Stretching Your Makeup“, “How Safe is Your Makeup“ and has contributed to several articles relating to makeup safety.
