Sick Leave/Personal Illness
1. Purpose and Use of Sick Leave/Personal Illness
a. The college shall provide an opportunity for employees with personal illness/disability to request approved time away from work to seek resolution of the problem and/or recuperate so that they may return to full productivity.
b. Sick leave may be taken only to the extent that it is actually accrued. Sick leave may be used only for personal illness/disability except where otherwise specifically provided by other leave provisions or approved personnel policies.
c. An employee may not use sick leave for any time for which a claim is made under the college's short-term disability plan. A separating employee shall not be compensated for unused, accrued sick leave.
2. Rate of Accrual
a. Each full-time regular employee shall receive one (1) sick day (or eight (8) straight time hours) per month worked with no accrual limit.
b. In determining the accrual of sick leave time, the fifteenth (15) day of the month will be considered the vesting date. An eligible employee beginning on or before the fifteenth (15) day of the month will be granted accrual for that month, an employee beginning after the fifteenth (15) will not.
3. Medical Reports
a. A certificate from an employee's doctor may be requested, at the discretion of the Office of Human Resources, to verify an illness or to ensure that the employee has sufficiently recovered to return to work.
b. The college reserves the right to designate and seek the advice of a doctor of its own choosing to verify the same. In the event that the college exercises this right, it shall pay for the designated consultation.
4. Excessive Absenteeism
Unauthorized or excessive absenteeism may be grounds for disciplinary action.
